Meaning of the letters in Silicon Steel

Steel grades consist of numbers, letters and digits.
The letter symbols for non-oriented and oriented Silicon-steels are “W” and “Q” respectively.
The thickness is placed in the front, the letter symbol in the middle, and the iron loss value at the end, e.g. 30Q113. In oriented Silicon-steel, the letter symbol “G” and “Q” are placed together for high magnetic susceptibility, e.g. 30QG113.
The number after the letter indicates 100 times the value of iron loss (W/kg).

  • The letter “G” indicates the test at high frequency; without “G”, it means the test at frequency of 50 waves.
    30Q113 indicates the maximum unit weight iron loss value of 1.13W/kg at 50 Hz for cold-rolled oriented Silicon-steel products for electrical use.
    The cold-rolled Silicon-steel is expressed in the same way as the Japanese standard (JISC2552-86), only the letter symbols are different, for example, the orientation silicon steel grade 27Q140, the corresponding JIS grade is 27G140, 30QG110 and the corresponding JIS grade is 30P110 (G: indicates ordinary material, P: indicates high orientation). Non-oriented silicon steel grade 35W250, the corresponding JIS grade is 35A250.

  • A ferrosilicon soft magnetic alloy with extremely low carbon content. According to chemical composition, it can be divided into low Silicon-steel (containing 1.0% ~ 2.5% silicon) and high Silicon-steel (containing 3.0% ~ 4.5% silicon). Adding silicon can increase resistivity and maximum permeability, and reduce coercivity, core loss and magnetic aging. Mainly used as iron cores of various transformers, motors and generators. According to different uses, the contents of silicon and aluminum are changed during smelting to meet different magnetic requirements. The amount of carbon, sulfur and inclusions should be minimized. Silicon steel is mainly used to produce hot-rolled or cold-rolled silicon steel sheets in industry.

Classification of silicon sheet

  • Silicon-steel sheet can be divided into low silicon and high silicon according to its different silicon content. Low silicon sheet contains less than 2.8% silicon, it has a certain mechanical strength, mainly used in the manufacture of motors, commonly known as motor Silicon-steel sheet; high silicon sheet contains 2.8%-4.8% silicon, it has good magnetic properties, but more brittle, mainly used in the manufacture of transformer cores, commonly known as transformer silicon steel sheet. There is no strict boundary between the two in actual use, and high silicon wafers are commonly used to manufacture large motors. B, according to the production process can be divided into hot-rolled and cold-rolled two, cold-rolled and can be divided into grain non-oriented and grain-oriented two. Cold-rolled wafers have uniform thickness, good surface quality and high magnetic properties, therefore, with the development of the industry, hot-rolled wafers have been replaced by cold-rolled wafers (China has explicitly requested to stop using hot-rolled silicon steel wafers, which is the early term “cold instead of hot”).

  • A. Low iron loss. The most important indicator of quality, countries around the world are divided into grades by the value of iron loss, the lower the iron loss, the higher the grade, the higher the quality.
  • B. High magnetic induction strength. In the same magnetic field can obtain a higher magnetic inductance of Silicon-steel  sheet, with it manufacturing the volume and weight of the motor or transformer core is smaller, relatively speaking, can save Silicon-steel sheet, copper wire and insulation materials.
  • C. High stacking factor. The surface of Silicon-steel sheet is smooth, flat and uniform in thickness, so that the stacking factor of the core can be improved.
  • D. Good flushability. For the manufacture of small and micro motor cores, this is more important.
  • E. Good adhesion of the surface to the insulation film and good weldability.
  • F. Magnetic aging.
  • G. The Silicon-steel sheet must be delivered after pickling and rolling and annealing.
