What is a safety grating?

safety grating
  • The safety grating is a high-strength metal grating designed to provide a rugged, non-slip solution for industrial applications requiring additional traction. A safety grating is a sheet or channel cut into a pattern that allows easy discharge of liquid and debris. The pattern typically includes a raised surface for enhanced grip along the entire length of the grating.
  • The high strength nature of the safety grating means that the grating has a high allowable load limit, while the grating remains highly maneuverable and can be easily cut, customized and installed in situ.
  • Safety gratings are typically low maintenance and resistant to corrosion (stainless steel, aluminum, and galvanized), making them a popular choice for improving safety while reducing cleanup efforts in industrial Settings.
  • STD series light and small safety grating is a kind of on-beam product developed and developed by foreign advanced technology. It has passed the European CE certification (EN61000 EN550240), has strong stability and can completely replace the imported area sensor. Such as NA, LC, SAS, PJV series, etc., has been widely used in assembly lines, injection molding machines, hydraulic presses, hot melt machines, laminating machines, and other less dangerous equipment.

What is the purpose of the safety grating?

Gratings are designed to reduce the risk of slips and falls and can be installed anywhere where these accidents are at high risk. It can be used in any indoor or outdoor location and is ideal for areas where there is an increased risk of slips and falls due to water, mud, ice, snow, grease or other cleaners. The nature of the grille design allows for the discharge of fluid, mud or dirt and ensures that the sidewalk is not slippery.

  • Typical uses for safety gratings include:
  • Stairs and steps
  • Scaffolding and work platform
  • catwalk
  • Vehicle steps or access trays
  • A roof passage or walkway
  • The balcony
  • Non-slip industrial flooring for wet areas.
  • The lightweight nature of the grating makes it easy to transport and install anywhere, and the ease of handling grating sections means it can be molded, cut and custom installed easily in the field.

Gratings are manufactured at fixed lengths, allowing one person to complete the installation, and the modular nature of the gratings means maximum adaptation to a variety of environments, regardless of the required length.

How is the safety grating made?

  • Gratings are usually made of carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, or austenitic stainless steel. In the case of a channel grate, the steel or aluminum is first cold-shaped into the shape of the channel. The contours of these holes are raised and serrated to increase traction. These holes provide the open areas required for high levels of drainage while still maintaining a high workload. Punch holes also help reduce weight and facilitate transportation.
  • There are many variations and patterns available for safety gratings. Perhaps the most common are struts, which consist of diamond-shaped holes with raised serrated surfaces.
  • After the steel plate has been cut to size and stamped, it can be hot dipped to galvanize the grille to provide corrosion resistance. In some cases, other coatings were applied to the gratings to further repel the liquid or to add additional traction.

Working principle of safety grating

The luminescent device emits several invisible infrared beams, and the receiver receives the infrared beams from the luminescent device, forming a rectangular detection curtain. The whole grating is detected by beam-by-beam scanning. Any opaque object larger than a certain size (such as a part of the operator’s body, opaque workpiece, etc.) invading the light curtain area, will cause shading. When the safety grating detects the blackout, it will enter the “abnormal” state – interrupt output (such as relay from closed to open state, transistor into cutoff state, etc.) within 20ms of response time.
